Alternate Cuts:
This is the first song in the revolution to have multiple cuts. Here are links to listen to or download the alternate versions:
F Your War! (The Poor Soldier Cut)
F Your War! (Cut the Propaganda)

Included:
Quote - Battlefield Vietnam - "The skies are dangerous, G.I., they will napalm you tonight. They will give you a medal, G.I., but only after you are dead. Your government lies to you every day. Poor soldier. You have lost this war, G.I., your army will leave you behind. Poor soldier. Your rich leaders grow richer while you die in the swamp, G.I.. You cannot dig foxhole to hide in, G.I. Joe. Your pilots do not care that you are down here, G.I.. They cannot see you from your airplanes, G.I., they come to bomb you. Poor soldier. G.I., your helicopters fall from the sky like broken birds. Imperialists made you fight this war, G.I., they do not care about you. Your government has betrayed you. Your government has abandoned you. They will not return for you. Poor soldier."
Ugress - Klavier Aparat
The Faint - The Total Job (Photek Remix)
TV on the Radio - Red Dress (THE GLITCH MOB Remix)

Purchase:
EA - Battlefield: Vietnam
Ugress - Kosmonaut EP - Klavier Aparat [free]
The Faint - Danse Macabre Remixes - Total Job (Photek Remix)
TV on the Radio - Red Dress (The Glitch Mob Remix) [iTunes Store Link]

Review: The Glitch Mob's remix of "Red Dress" blew up over the Internet this weekend. This remix transforms the original from an indie song into one that I expect to find on many dance floors. You almost can't help going crazy to the beats and shouting to the lyrics. Rightfully so, then, this makes up the last track in this mix. The first is from Ugress, a melodic theme to set a contrast for what comes next. Building out of the piano keys of "Klavier Aparat" is Photek's remix of "The Total Job" by The Faint. The lyrics offer a contrast to the quotes from BFV, reminding everyone that "a lawyer with an eloquent tongue" is as much a part of the war. Finally, mixing beautifully into The Faint comes TV on the Radio de la Glitch Mob.

NOTE: I'm no longer purchasing copies for iTunes Store account holders (out of spare cash). Hope everyone who got one is enjoying the hell out of 'em. I may do purchase rounds like this in the future, so stay tuned.

New Pepper Mill & Shel Silverstein

"Little Candle" by Jon Carling

Before going into new releases, there is news from the Pepper Mill concerning Shel Silverstein ("The Missing Piece Meets the Big O", "Where the Sidewalk Ends", "The Giving Tree", etc...). There is no good news here... only loss. The family who survives Shel (and who owns the rights to his works) have threatened legal actions against almost a hundred artists who had planned to release works inspired by Silverstein's poems and stories. There was no money involved in the project, only a gathering of creative souls from around the world who had all been inspired by the great poet's writings.

The actions of the family strike a personal chord. They feel like a betrayal of his life and message. Worse, it feels like he has been murdered posthumously, as this means any artists who his message inspires cannot build on that message... not without obfuscation. It feels like a complete loss. Over. Unbelievable. I don't think it has fully set in either. So many have been inspired by his works... too many losses.

If you're a fan of Shel Silverstein, please spread the word. Instead of purchasing off-the-shelf copies (or other new versions that would support the estate that has done this) I would urge to buy used instead. Buy from resellers or from the used section on Amazon. There are alternatives that do not support the family but keep Silverstein's message circulating in the memepool.

Sending mad love out to Pepper Mill and all the artists who had already begun work on this project. Thank you for dreaming the dream in the first place. For Anyone unfamiliar with the label, read up on the article about this project here:

  http://www.peppermillrecords.com/comesitbymyfire/

  Again, please spread the word.

Despite the legal threats and the closure of this project, new releases are still coming out of the Pepper Mill. Here are the links:

  Volumina
  Sky Barstow

The highlight here is the eclectic collection from Sky Barstow. It's a sound you cannot put your finger on.

Diplo - Decent Work for Decent Pay - 200
Blue Sky Black Death - A Heap of Broken Images - From Sun's Angle
Blockhead - Music by Cavelight - Insomniac Olympics

Review: This mix opens with one of the many famous quotes from "Army of Darkness", quickly dropping into the clashing beat of Diplo's "200". The sound of fading instrumentation and glitchy static give way to "From Sun's Angle" by Blue Sky Black Death, bringing in a new depth of instrumentation and stability to the beat. Finally, the first piano keys from "Insomniac Olympics" announce that Blockhead is moving in, but not before the two beats and chords play around for a bit of mash-up style techno.

Music Liberation Month

As of April, all music available on the iTunes Store--the largest music reseller in the world--is available only in the DRM-free, high quality iTunes Plus format. No more need for authorization, nor requiring that you be near an Internet connection to play purchased music... and all at a higher quality. With the largest source of music worldwide making this shift, the death of DRM is being celebrated nearly everywhere. This is especially exciting to the DJ community, who can now use a higher quality item in their mixing and without needing to remove the DRM-encryption from each song beforehand. If you have iTunes, here's the link.

April 2k9, Music Liberation Month.
