Zes renegade parties de la South-By have come to an end. Done. It's done come to our attention that this here bit o bytespace has not only stagnated... but it's done died on us. More specifically, Drop.io is as dead as it gets. With a bit o pokin n a proddin, we've been talked into trying a few dif alternatives. A lil searchy search may land ya on some of our experiments, but jez not sure where we're goin wit this. Review: Wax Tailor's debut album, "Tales of the Forgotten Melodies", was my favorite album of '06. It certainly defined entire spans of that year. I remember hearing "Que Sera" playing from someone's laptop at a coffee shop (as I was hitchhiking almost all of 2k6, I practically lived outta coffee shops). Ever since finding out who was behind the music, I've been turning on one person after another to the love of the Tailor. Their follow-up album was a partial let down, if only because of the expectations built up by the first album. However, their '09 release, "In the mood for life", is the best of both albums. The entire album can be listened to on their site here. Their style is part turntablism, part trip-hop, part hip-hop and with heavy splashes of film noir. Building out of this first track is Diplo's remix of "Veni Vidi Vici" by The Black Lips. Diplo's second album moved away from the leftfield sound of the first and more towards big beat, hip-hop and rock. This song makes a good signature for how the rest of the album sounds and leads well into "Autumn Kaskade" by KnowSleep. KnowSleep, the premier artist for the Street Ritual label, was an instant surprise to my playlist. Their debut, self-titled album was originally released with two free songs to "try them out". After hearing "Voice of Dissent", I knew I had to complete the album. Their borderline grime style combines elements of hip-hop and glitch. "What will they do next" is the only question that remains.

Read that first line again. If you don't know every one of those names, you should. Here's your 30-second education if not: David Bowie (aka, The Goblin King, etc...) should need no introduction. He released his self-titled album first, a complete sellout work that made him the money and name needed to go completely insane in the world of music. He is a force. Maynard James Keenan lent vocals to the Green Jelly project, although he is known most widely for his vocals and work as the lead on TOOL and A Perfect Circle. His independent project--Puscifer--is part brand, part music and entirely his intention and the people he spends his life with. Putting his vocals in with Bowie is a sick enough move on its own, but it's not over. Re:nholder (aka, Danny Lohner, etc...) is a bassist, keyboard playing electronic orchestrator who's worked with NIN, Manson, Eminem and a ton of other bands. You know him. He's touched a part of your life whether or not you know it. Anyone "in" the industry knows the touch of Lohner on a project. And what about the last... that Frusciante guy? Well there was this little group called The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and me have lent a lil guitar work to... oh, just about every song on five or so albums. He does his own singer songwriter stuff on the side as well. Good peep.

Ok, storytime... gather round chidlings and wax addicts. This little piece from the vault was originally released in September de '06. I've made no alterations to the audio... and didn't dare molest the precious album art. You can see it above... seriously... that's it. At the time, it was one of the very first mixes in the revolution that even had art. As you can see, it was also one of the first tracks to have a title--"Wonderfulmadness". The modern title pays homage to the original. Whereas many a mix has simply not aged well with the years, this one is a head nodder every single time... altho u'd think the ending could use some cleaning. Can't have everything. Some more notes on the archaic aspects to the mix. When I salvaged it out of cold storage, the file was still named "01b [8:27] ADHF - The ADHD Revolution.mp3". Any longtime followers of the revolution should get a laugh about the dust the filename has gathered. Ah... the past. Anyways... moving on... .

*A note on "Bongo Bong": Remixes have been dropping like flies for a year now... and finally the death nail may be apoundin. The song "Bongo Bong" has been replaced on both Amazon and the iTunes Store with some one-minute thingy that is very much not the right song. I don't know what's going down, but this song could be on its way out for some reason. If you can find a real copy for sale, grab it before it's gone.

Review: The quote kicking off this mix continues the theme of machine logic versus human insanity (both with their own pros and cons), whirring immediately into "Terapolis Nightclub Fantasy" by the infinitely talented Ugress. The complex beat, clicks and switches in Terapolis easily mix into "Dorset Perception", the opening psytrance track from Shpongles second album. For those not in the loop, Shpongle has recently released their fourth album. We've yet to raise the funds to check it out, but it'll happen. Never has Shpongle let down an ear in waiting. Moving on, with a bit of pitch work, "Dorset Perception" bursts into the slow section of "Weird on a Monday Night" by Younger Brother (a very Shpongle-related side project). Almost all the "Alice in Wonderland" quotes are native to this track, with only a few additions made during the mixing. Finally, two different remixes for "Bongo Bong" by Manu Chao. While hitchhiking in '06, I was continuously trying to find out what this song was. I had heard it while at the Taos equinox rave but wasn't able to get the track name from the DJ. Finally, at Burning Man much later that year, I heard a fishing boat passing with it playing. I ran to catch up with the boat and got the name from the driver. I purchased it just a week later. The full cut of the song covers three different languages, never straying from the incredible signature instrumentation that Manu Chao has become known for. Enjoy!

Review: Kicking this mix off is a tune from the Zimm himself, the opening song to the score for the third Pirates movie (there is a fourth on the way). The lyrics set the theme of "the criminal versus the tyrant". Mixing immediately out of the stomping of the opening track is Maynard's "Counting Bodies", switching the voice of the theme from the criminal to the mind of the tyrant and it's particular form of "protection". Carrying the mix to the end is Diplo's "Summer's Gonna Hurt You", a track so heavily influenced by the band Leftfield that one can almost abstract elements from different songs now more than a decade old. No complaints there, as one can never get enough Leftfield.

Belated? Always 8P

Sending mad gratitude out to the crew of the Gypsy Queen, easily one of my favorite art cars on the playa in years. Their late night DJ was mixing glitch and grime to the likes of Widdler, Glitch Mob and Mimosa. Who even knows about Mimosa other than me? I had such a great time dancing on this tug boat that I went and hunted down the DJ after the boat had docked. Sadly, I missed him, but found the house DJ, thanking him and forwarding thanks for the late night awesome music as well. Turns out they were camped right near by my own tent, so I was able to hitch a ride home the last few nights just by hunting down my favorite mobile party.

Music: The Glitch Mob has landed. Their year of touring paid off in a big way, as I couldn't walk three city blocks in the desert without hearing them. I couldn't believe it. Easily the song that dominated was their remix of "West Coast Rocks". It's one of their most popular songs, and easily the highlight of their energy packed shows. Also, a large portion of BRC's populace are from California, so the song makes all the more sense. While the Mob didn't make an appearance themselves, they've already made an entrance towards dominating the playa. Already looking forward to see how much more technical, glitchy tunes infect the desert next year.

Art: The temple--The Fire of Fires--is tied for my favorite temple of all time. It was opposite in almost every way to last year's--The Basura Sagrada. The Sagrada was angular, with sharp points and made almost entirely from reclaimed and purified materials. The Fire of Fires was almost all curves, an admixture of spirals and circles. Even the angular parts built in curves, whereas the points exploded from the central flame at the top. There was a lot of incredible art, as well as fun... the towering slide (50ft? 100ft?) being another highlight. Sheesh! Props to the Man as well. I usually shrug off the centerpiece that is this event's namesake, but this year's design really was awesome. Easily inspired by The Waffle of '06.

Community: This is the first year ever that I've gone rogue without a camp. I really felt it about a week after the burn, as I just didn't get enough of the peeps I love. I had hella fun in every other aspect, but was nearing the empty mark when it came to quality time with the tribe. At the same time, I met a lot of new faces from around the world and had a completely different experience this year than years previously. I missed one wedding from showing up too late on the playa, then missed a second wedding due to tent destruction by storm... doh. We'll see what next year holds.

Afterparty: Mad props to Reno-Tahoe International. Some parts of Reno can be very unfriendly to burners. Not so with the airport. The woman checking me in on my way outta Reno actually complimented me on how much dust I got out of my bags. Security was actually joking with us as we fumbled thru their check point... a true blessing, especially when you've had your logic circuit blown and are still repairing. This year, I wrapped a little "welcome back to the Default World" care package for myself that included my passport, my ticket receipt and some cash, then put it in my water bag where it would never be at risk of loss. Because of this, I had absolutely zero worries on the playa, so I completely let go this year... and am still recovering. Reno's lil airport made that re-entry so much easier.

Y Mas: Finally, sending mad props to the biobus, as this lil space shuttle drove us out to the desert from the airport with a stop off at Whole Foods for noms and water. Alejandro, our shuttle pilot, somehow spotted me as "the music guy" the second he met me and set me up as DJ for the bus on our way out. It was a drunken, crazy body party of a ride that I plan to repeat as often as possible in the future. More than half our bus were virgins, so it was the first time I got to see the gate keepers initiate a whole mass of people at once. Sold for life bitches... I'll be on the biobus again next year.

Next year's theme is Metropolis. While nowhere near as inspiring as this year, it's no downer. I'm expecting some towering art installations, plenty of art deco and some generous helpings from the cyberpunk scene. Either way, I'll be there. I never really leave.

Review: Kicking off with a reality check quote from "The Dark Knight", this mix moves quickly from drum and bass into glitch into grime. The opening remix for "Lord of the Null Lines" provides the first burst of energy. Building onto this beat before falling into distortion is 65's "Goodbye, 2007". The final selection is from the up and coming group Mimosa. Their song "Lullabyte" brings the mix back into a form of cohesion without abandoning the glitch textures to do so.

Recently came across a question Yahoo Answers about dance music... where it came from, how it's defined and more. With how large the question was, Yahoo wouldn't allow for how large the answer is. Given that limitation, it's being brought up here on the ADHD Revolution... enjoy...

You are taking on a seriously large project. As a DJ, however, I've got to jump in and answer. I actually wrote a friend of mine who runs an electronica label, so this answer will be part myself (HF Trinity) and part him (Jaya Prime). I'll separate the two if you want to use quotes from an actual producer and a DJ. You mentioned DJ and "scratching", so I'm under the assumption that you mean the advent of electronic music and the transformation of clubs.

Jaya Prime: "Without going back in music history too far, disco has to be mentioned. The jazz clubs of the 50s and 60s are closing, people are losing interest, but the closed clubs are still there. Then New York decides to take the jazz club and go the direct opposite direction with it. Jazz clubs were dark, smoke-filled places where people came to talk and often cut deals in the dark. In these same buildings, suddenly there was light everywhere--the floor and ceilings and walls--and the music was too loud to talk over. It was for dancing only, although I hear it was still smokey. About mid-70s it is on the radio stations and dominating the club scenes. What killed disco was rock in the 80s. Crowds left the club and went to concerts. Disco artists either could not get paid or went to rock themselves."

Jaya Prime: "Rewind. Something else started at about the same time that disco was taking off, only it wouldn't become very popular until disco began to die--Kraftwerk."

HF Trinity: "My noble editor role is kicking in. I have to give some real justice to Kraftwerk. Nearly everyone who's anyone lists Kraftwerk as an inspiration. They've been covered by U2, Coldplay, Duran Duran... sampled by Jay-Z, Gary Numan, Depeche Mode... I was surprised by some of the influences I found on Kraftwerk's Wiki."

Jaya Prime: "Kraftwerk took electronic instruments, previously used in cinema and on television, then combined them with vocoders and an electronic beat. Combined with others, the transformation of Frankfurt, Germany into a club city began. People began dancing to music made electronically. There was no name for the genre back then. Now the genre they dominate is called minimal or minimal-techno. They combined their music with simple lighting effects, such as color-changing plates. This type of music spread thru Europe in the late 70s. It wouldn't come to the states until the death of disco."

Jaya Prime: "While disco was dying in New York, a new type of music began spreading in Chicago. What Kraftwerk and other electronica groups had established was that a steady beat, such as 120 beats-per-minute--BPM--meant that mixing one song into another one became very easy. Chicago House music built on this idea, making records of very stable beats within the range of 120bmp to 134bpm. Opinions vary on this, but producers still call 120bpm songs 'Chicago House'. House music is commonly called 'uhn-tiss music' because of the constant beat, beat, beat structure. The beat changes very little, but it got people into clubs in Chicago and it got them dancing. It's still popular in clubs everywhere."

HF Trinity: "House music was kinda urban as well. Early house had jazz instruments, samples from soul singers and other elements picked up right outta the old jazz scene. I wasn't clubbing at age six, so I wasn't there, but I bet that sound got a lot of the people into the clubs from nostalgia. It also sampled only the best of jazz, so you get the cream of the crop combined with a new sound."

Jaya Prime: "On a technical note, house music was made possible by the invention of the drum machine--the Roland CR-78. This machine let bands program beats for it to synthesize while they focused on instrumentation from keyboard synthesizers and microphones, the latter usually run thru a vocoder. Being able to program the beats meant that they could be mixed exactly and their would be little way to pick up a difference in the sound."

Jaya Prime: "To talk about beat-mixing--also called beat-matching--it is best to talk about train-wrecking. When two beats don't exactly match up, you can easily hear the different beats as they thump off-time. It creates a fingers-on-the-chalkboard effect and can easily ruin a DJ's name if they mess up this bad. The human ear can easily pick up on small differences, especially in a club where everything is louder. If the DJ is doing their job, then a dancer shouldn't even notice that the beats for a song are being mixed until the chords and voice from the new song start replacing the old song. It is when a DJ is not doing their job that dancers notice. Dancers do not forgive easily, so most DJs practice beat-mixing to perfection until ever going live."

HF Trinity: "Who doesn't know Rapture by Blondie? That's completely a beat machine, a synth and her singing. She's even using that first Roland. Pretty good for a Playboy bunny. Chicago house mixed in a lot of the 80s bands that were using Rolands... Genesis, Peter Gabriel... European electronica using beat machines... then the standard issue soul-inspired house records themselves. Mix them all together and you've got the 80's underground scene that started in Chicago."

NOTE: Just lost Prime. It's about to be the weekend and a crazy one at that as summer gets started. He sent me a lot of snippets to toss in about your opening questions. Downside is that I'm the less organized one, but I know my Wiki entries in place of experience.

HF: "Hip-hop had been dying since the jazz days. What no one debates is who brought it back to life... Run-what-the-hell-just-hit-my-ears-DMC! They released 'It's like that' in the early 80's and reanimated the old corpse that was hip-hop. You can hear the beat-box and synths in the track, completely programmed so that they were free to pick up mics and rap over the programmed sound. With their success, other hip-hop artists joined in the electronic craze to program their beats and sounds and put the focus on the microphone."

HF: "Gangster rap is where sampling got real popular. With sampling, you loop a part of a record (usually the catchy part) and beat-mix it to a drum machine or over another record. Most early gangster rap sampled soul songs, disco tracks and even jazz records. They were banned on radios and from playing some cities, but the DJs started spinning their records into house music sets. Since the late 80's, hip-hop and house have dominated the American club scene."

HF: "1990 kicked off with a more modern spin on sampling. MC Hammer sampled Rick James for his song 'U Can't Touch This', then Vanilla Ice sampling Queen and David Bowie for his song 'Ice Ice Baby'. Both were huge. I've gotta admit that I jammed out to both of 'em. They were also criticized for how much they used samples, but it was too late. Sampling became a part of rap, hip-hop and club music. In fact, the use of sampling became a signature for what became known as club music. Club music usually just means a remix of a top-charting song so that it fits within the house music bpm-range. Sampling created a lot of legal issues as well. Now, most artists pay a license fee before ever using a sample when making a song. Otherwise they risk court fees and royalty payments as long as their track is making money."

Jaya: "When London got hold of Chicago house, producers began blending the music with more heavy synthesizers. It was popular in Europe. It became so large that the clubs were too small for the growth of the scene. This gave birth to the rave scene at the turn of the decade. The 90s meant music had left the clubs and was being held as festivals outside of the cities or in warehouses. The lyric-free synthesized music that became popular is known as acid house or simply 'rave music'. The size drew so much attention that the authorities got involved. Drugs had always been a part of the scene, but the drugs gave the authorities a way to make the scene illegal."

HF: "Drugs can't be removed from the rave scene, the disco scene, club music... whatever. Not everyone used them... but almost everyone. The same's still true. When big brother cracked down, the rave scene went underground. That's where you get parties happening in abandoned warehouses in the middle and late 90's. A few DJs, some promoters and a handful of music lovers scout a place out... then work out the technical details and set a date. They network out a message with directions to get to the place. Man... some directions were so cryptic that you wouldn't make it. Cell phones made things easier, as promoters would give directions on-the-fly. You get a ring and find out there's a party in a few hours. If you can make it, you ring back and find out what number to call for directions. Good stuff. Good memories. Entirely illegal... the properties may have been abandoned, but the lots were still owned and sometimes even patrolled. They were famous for being busted by the cops after only a few hours."

HF: "Electro is pretty much what all modern dance music is. Daft Punk's album Discovery came out right before the year 2000 and all the craziness that the year's end had in store. It carried the signature heavy synths that Europe was famous for, but used a vocoder to distort lyrics as well as instruments. Their sound was easily inspired by 80's rock... but with a club spin to just about everything. The final element to electro (on top of heavy synths and vocoders) is the beat, which centers around 128bpm and is heavily distorted. The bpm can range about 10bpm in either direction, but it was faster than most house and much more catchy."

HF: "Electro spread with the quickness since the turn of the millennium. Producers like Justice and Yuksek have a part in many bands outside their own. Groups like Crystal Castles and Cut Copy may as well define the current dance scene. Spin-offs from electro (electro-punk, electro-rap) mix just as easily into house as they do electro, making club scenes that cater to the part of the city they're found in."

This is a bias history, straight-up. It's too big to be anything but biased. To answer some of your specific questions, I'll grab Jaya's snippets and fill in my own, then pull in some Wiki articles.

What is dance music?
HF: "Dance music is defined by having a predictable beat-per-minute, often looped four-times before changing beats or instruments. This makes it easy to change the pitch/speed of another song to match the song that is currently playing. Once beat-matched/mixed, the volume on a second record player (or CD player, or laptop) is increased so that the new song is merged with the song that is already playing. Often, a cross-fader is used to lower the volume on the current song while increasing the volume of the new song. If the beats match (as well as the harmonics), then everything sounds like a smooth progression. If the beat or harmonics or lyrics don't match, then this is where you start losing listeners. Missed beat-mixing's called a train-wreck."

How is it used?
Jaya: "Electronic instruments and electronica tracks form the backdrop of all modern rap, hip-hop, R&B and club music. While most film uses electronica that is not meant for dancing, films like Heat and The Bourne Identity use dance, house and electro to enhance a film's energy. It's used by DJs when they mix sets at a club or as a mix-set on a CD."

Where is it used?
Jaya: "Dance music is played in clubs, at festivals, in cinema/television and on iPods. There are clubs in most major cities, each catering to different genres. Some of the most popular festivals are Burning Man, the Detroit Electronic Music Festival and the Winter Music Conference. It is also a part of outdoor venues like Coachella and Lollapalooza. A form of the rave scene still exists in psytrance parties. These often happen outdoors and far away from cities. The most famous annual psytrance festival--Goa--is in Goa, India. Drugs are not necessarily legal there, they simply don't enforce the laws where the festival takes place. Finally, computer games have sold sountracks for their games based using well-known electronica artists."

Terminology:
Track: A single musical selection on a record, CD or as data. The term is preferred in place of "song" because song means "lyrics" to most people. A lot of dance music doesn't rely on lyrics.
BPM: Beats-per-minute. How many bass-beats a track has in a single minute. Some early artists used a metronome to measure the beats. This was replaced once artists could program the beats using beat machines and print the bpm right on the record. Modern mixers and laptops automatically read the bpm. Some even will automatically adjust the pitch of a track to match the bpm of another track.
Turntablism: Turntablism, also known as "scratching" or "freestyle", means messing with the records as they play so that they create dramatic changes in how a sample sounds or how a track plays. Hitting the records, rewinding them and adjusting the volume or equalizer are all forms of turntablism. Cut Chemist, DJ Shadow, RJD2, DJ Qbert, MixMaster Mike, DJ Skribble and more are all well-known turntablists.
House: Also known as Chicago house. A four-by-four beat ranging from 120bpm to 134bpm. Heavily influenced by disco, soul and jazz music.
Four-by-Four: Tracks are commonly produced in loops. The beat is programmed in sections of fours. That means you can count the start of a beat, then the start of the next beat. After four counts, if you count the fifth beat, you will notice that the instrumentation changes... often even the beat itself. Once you've heard it, you can count any modern song off by using a four-by-four beat. Knowing when the music will change, combined with the bpm, makes mixing as fluid an art as it is.
DJ Set: Also called a "mix-set". This is just the term given to multiple tracks mixed together into a single "set". Most often it's how a DJ refers to a CD they've put out that contains tracks from various artists mixed into a single whole. You can also call a DJ's live performance a set.
Mixing: The core of DJing. The beat for a new track is slowed or sped up (called a pitch-shift or pitch-change) so that it matches a track that is currently playing. The volume for the track is zero when it comes to the speakers the audience hears, but a second line is running to the DJ's headsets so they can hear the beat. Once the beat is matched, they can then mix the new track into the current one by raising the volume on the new track and lowering the current track's volume. This is also called "beat-matching".
The Mixer: A mixer is a device that controls the volume for multiple devices. It is that box you see in the middle of two record tables (or CD mixers). The most common configuration has headphones plugged into it with two mixing tables. The volume-out to the headphones from both tables is set at a hundred-percent. The volume-out to the speaker system the audience hears is often changed by the DJ so that they can only hear one track, or by changing the equalizer on the mixer so that they can only hear the bass or tenor of a track that is playing.
Tables: Records tables and CD mixers are both called tables. There are usually two, although DJs like Badboy Bill and Carl Cox are known to use three tables. The tracks they are playing all output to the mixer, where the DJ can control the volume at-will.
Wax: The most common term for a record in the DJ world. Even though most DJs have moved to CD, you'll still hear their discs called wax. Some DJs are already pulling out laptops instead of tables. The term for mixing data on a laptop is traxx in place of wax, maintaining a feel of the old in the new.

Review: The Glitch Mob's remix of "Red Dress" blew up over the Internet this weekend. This remix transforms the original from an indie song into one that I expect to find on many dance floors. You almost can't help going crazy to the beats and shouting to the lyrics. Rightfully so, then, this makes up the last track in this mix. The first is from Ugress, a melodic theme to set a contrast for what comes next. Building out of the piano keys of "Klavier Aparat" is Photek's remix of "The Total Job" by The Faint. The lyrics offer a contrast to the quotes from BFV, reminding everyone that "a lawyer with an eloquent tongue" is as much a part of the war. Finally, mixing beautifully into The Faint comes TV on the Radio de la Glitch Mob.

New Pepper Mill & Shel Silverstein

  Before going into new releases, there is news from the Pepper Mill concerning Shel Silverstein ("The Missing Piece Meets the Big O", "Where the Sidewalk Ends", "The Giving Tree", etc...). There is no good news here... only loss. The family who survives Shel (and who owns the rights to his works) have threatened legal actions against almost a hundred artists who had planned to release works inspired by Silverstein's poems and stories. There was no money involved in the project, only a gathering of creative souls from around the world who had all been inspired by the great poet's writings.

  The actions of the family strike a personal chord. They feel like a betrayal of his life and message. Worse, it feels like he has been murdered posthumously, as this means any artists who his message inspires cannot build on that message... not without obfuscation. It feels like a complete loss. Over. Unbelievable. I don't think it has fully set in either. So many have been inspired by his works... too many losses.

  If you're a fan of Shel Silverstein, please spread the word. Instead of purchasing off-the-shelf copies (or other new versions that would support the estate that has done this) I would urge to buy used instead. Buy from resellers or from the used section on Amazon. There are alternatives that do not support the family but keep Silverstein's message circulating in the memepool.

The ADHD Revolution

Why are there 14 subsets, then weird alpha notations next to each number? What makes this a revolution? Allow me to explain all this and more. There are multiple revolutions going on here, and the format has grown over time to evolve. I'll take it one revolution at a time.

The Album Is Dead: An 8-tracks could hold 45-minutes of tunes. Artists were quick to fill all eight tracks, and listeners even quicker to listen. This was once the length that defined an "album". Then came along the C60 cassette tape. It held 30-minutes per side. Albums became longer. CDs? 80-minutes. Something happened about then... the full length of time wasn't being filled by the artists. The idea of an "album" became "stuff put together in one place" and was no longer time-defined. DVDs solidified this, as no one ran out to fill them. Then along came data... songs stored on hard drives and transferred across networks. No one will ever fill data. They cannot. The idea even of "stuff put together in one place" has become absurd, as the "one place" at this point is the Internet. Already, labels like The Glitch Mob are simply releasing singles as they come out, making two- or three-song singles and releasing them into the wild. The ADHD Revolution has a defined beginning with no end, and is released here, elsewhere and to subscribers as tracks are mixed. The album is dead. Data has killed it.

The CD Is Dead: I saw someone with a compact disc player while mixing at an NYE party in L.A. at the end of 2008. I actually had to verify with them that it was a CD and not an MP3CD player. Just a CD... amazing. My exact words were, "Well, thats... I mean... how quaint." The modern era is a world of the iPod, which owns the portable media player market and no longer works off of the idea of playing only one artist's music. It is meant to hold thousands of songs. For DJs who mix electronica, the move into this modern world simply hasn't happened. They still mix sets the length of a CD. When a listener puts these on an iPod and hit random, these mixed tracks jump very unsmoothly into the music then come to a screeching halt. It's jarring. The alternative is to put the entire mix together into one track, but most users skip to the next song instead of listen to the full mix... eventually removing it entirely from their iPod. The solution was the idea of the subset, which only a few rare mixers have adopted. The ADHD Revolution is composed entirely of subsets, mixing two or three songs together with quotes that have defined beginnings and ends, and meld beautifully with other songs no matter whether or not played on random... but random's still the best. But, just as Web 2.0 improves yet includes Web 1, The ADHD Revolution, from track01 to track14, can still fit on and be burned to an 80-minute optical disc, ensuring backwards compatibility and allowing listeners to burn a "best of" for their friends.

DRM Is Dead: Music Liberation Day is coming up in April of 2009. The iTunes Store is removing DRM from all the music that they offer. No more needing to authorize a song in order to play it, nor losing the ability to play a song when away from an Internet connection. P2P and open-source music, long before this, already killed "the one hit wonder". Artists could no longer sell an entire album on the basis of a single song. The easy access to music meant artists had to create an entire package--graphics, insert and amazing audio--in order to sell... which raised the quality. What an amazing difference the response has been between major labels and independents. A major label sees a hit they own on P2P and recoil, annoyed and angered. An independent sees their hit show up on P2P and they do a victory dance. Now, the two are merging. Open-source free music from independents has become widely dispersed across music networking sites, and they can move faster than the four hulking major labels. The labels and resellers are starting to adopt new models in order to remain more relevant... and even keep their artists. Still, in order to maintain backwards compatibility, The ADHD Revolution links to where songs and movies that are quoted can be bought from to help support those still living in the older paradigm of proprietary media. How we await the day that there is no longer 5-minutes of warning at the beginning of our favorite movies... punishing those of us who've paid for them.

Humanity Is Outdated: The world of flesh is already losing ground to the world born in silica. Anyone who steps back and looks around must instantly realize the incredible (even legendary) wonders and terrors of the modern world. It is amazing in both aspects, and so large to be completely out of control. The other realization is that applications and tools are already being created that surpass those who create it. In English: The maker does not know the limits of that which has been created. The ADHD Revolution takes the stance that this is the natural course of evolution, and flesh will either evolve with it or be replaced. It is beyond our control.

Where does "The ADHD Revolution" and The ADHF come from? You may want to read the section on The ADHF first. There is some specific info for "The ADHD Revolution" to add to that, however.

"The ADHD Revolution" was started in 2005. The idea began simply as using less than 2.5-minutes from each song in order to keep the mix interesting. The original reason for grouping the subsets together two or three songs at a time was rather simple... the CD contained too much info. In order to list all the tracks and quotes meant listing more than 50 items. No bueno. So the subsets were born. After having only heard the first four tracks, the founders of the AychEff--The Happy Funpack--gave it their stamp of approval. To set it apart from the original gang's handywork, it was produced under the artist name "ADHF".

Almost all tracks are mixed by AychEff Prime. However, many are mixed live, and different people inside and outside of the HF will make suggestions as the tracks progress. Also, different people have been taught to mix and made ADHD selections along the way. This is more of a group project in ways.

There are some specific themes that run thru "The ADHD Revolution". I'll go over each briefly.

Technophobia and Transhumanism: Some technology threatens humanity, some promises utopia. Technology is only a tool. If the weilder is evil, then evil acts are enhanced by technology; if good, then benefits are enhanced. If the maker, however, intends for the technology to serve good or evil, then the technology is more likely to benefit that form of implementation. "The ADHD Revolution" provides memes that are both anti-technology and pro-technology, and works to define what makes each form of tech differ from the next. It is transhumanist in the way that it prefers technology that helps humanity grow beyond itself, and that it leans more towards machines running the planet in place of humanity. It is anti-tech in the way that it works against technologies meant for destruction as well as common failings in technology.

Anti-Communism / Anti-Fascism: Commies can all drown in the ocean, and Fascists will all burn in the hell they created. "The ADHD Revolution" is strongly Libertarian and Capitalistic. Sound funny for a free set? If you think so, then you have let the "image of the dollar" get in the way of your sight and cannot see the economy of ideas because of it. The dollar has a lot of utility, but the greatest power is the memepool and the evolution of ideas. People are leftist commies because they fear fascism, and, vice-versa, they are rightist fascists because they fear communism. Both support and create that which they fear... and both are murderers and thieves. "The ADHD Revolution" aims to politically attack the extremists and leaders from both sides of this perverse spectrum.

Religion and the Tradition of Errors: If a religion believes itself "the one true path", then it is up for attack by "The ADHD Revolution". To steal a quote from a friend, ADHD is all about non-seriousness... seriously. Faithmongers from the various exclusive fanclubs of religion are the most serious, stubborn followers the Tradition of Errors ever did give birth to. The only hallmark of maturity there has ever been is the ability to laugh at one's self. Faithmongers (just as political extremists and philosophical true believers) have the lowest tolerance for humor. Someone else has to be laughing at this... it may as well be us.

Spirituality: The ADHF is not devoid of spirit, but draws from a more animistic spirit found everywhere and in everything. There is beauty in a broken body lying dead aside a road, and beauty in a sky torn open after the rains. Seeing beauty in all things and exploring the depths of both the darkness and the light is the only spirituality purported by "The ADHD Revolution". Its most common expression is in the ADHF09 subsets.

Insanity: Humans are straight nutballs, from here to Valhalla. In-frakking-sane! Often, ADHF tracks will play around with insanity and the state of raw humanity--both the animal that makes it genetic, and the Self in this creature that makes it aware... the memetic. Four out of five tracks from this set have an intended meme to infect the listener with, even using surface (or obvious) messages to create an opposing reaction, which is the actual meme that is meant to be transferred. Having studied memes for nearly ten years, human psychology and the spread of memetic data is a primary focus for "The ADHD Revolution" ...as it has doubled as an experiment with listeners to test memes out with.

Sex, Drugs and Electronica: Electronica is about dancing, and dancing is just as often about sex. Either the music is grindy, or the quotes are... or both... but "The ADHD Revolution" is not a sex-free zone in any way. You've come to the wrong place... especially with how explicit some subsets may be. You throw some drugs in the mix and you have a regular party. If schools actually taught this sheit, then the ADHF wouldn't need to be the ones doing the work... but it's fun work.

Welcome to The ADHD Revolution. This is the world of audio graffiti and the AychEff. We've got good robots, killer robots, empty cans of spray paint and we can spin out more $#!@ing awesome words than the FCC can censor. The music spans all genres of electronica, dabbling in the realms of rap and rock... whatever. IDM, breaks, big beat, house, trance, trip-hop, downtempo, dub, psytrance, glitch, leftfield, electro, electronica, techno... the list goes on. Electronic music has more genre specifiers than any other kind of music. Pay attention to the labels attached to each subset and learn yourself a bit.

This is leaving out AychEff superstars like DJ Ayanami, AychEff Mom and so many others... it'll have to do. Starting from right-to-left, I'll quickly go over the four above.

AychEff Prime: The main mixer on "The ADHD Revolution" who tosses around words like "graphic artist", "coder" and "holy man" when he can be pried away from mixing or a woman. As he's a hitchhiker and a recluse, Prime's one of the two members of the ADHF that will always be described using phrases like "he's somewhere".

AychEff Syphon: Syphon was first to bring some true music artistry into the Happy Funpack, playing clubs and house parties all around Austin. His high-tempo drum & bass, breaks and house sets are his brushes, and a dance floor his canvas.

AychEff One: AychEff One is the Pack's hard-hitting boomstick, and second in command. His visual artistry has been described as "hypnotic", "tribal" and a whole lotta "what the @%$# just drop-slapped my ass off the dance floor" thrown in there. The fact that at any moment he could be behind the wheel of a tow truck or a wrecking ball brings a smile to our faces.

AychEff Zero: Zero, as a forward scout paratrooper in the U.S. Army, wore dog-tags that had "JEDI" printed on them. His writings, visual artistry and musical skills (among many others) are often described as "erratic genius". AychEff Zero (aka, "Chadwick", aka "DJ Chad Is a DJ") is the hardest of the ADHF to pin down, and no one can state honestly where he may be unless he's in front of them. Did I mention he created the HF? Fortunately, he can be found on MySpace and on Blogger. Here's the linkage:

Now, as to "what" we are... well... I believe AychEff Zero put it best, so I'll simply post his own writings:

What reall matters-is the release.  The flood gates drawn
back.  The removal of yourself from the creative process.
For in that removal, the presence of art is all that remains.
The creative process is just that-a non involved wave of
an alien force which needs only the body to function.~
'It' draws upon your memories-not you.
'It' paints or writes or spins.  It expects to get
your way.

Think of it this way-

if a bunch of punk kids found the
reason why you love yourself- if they
wrote themselves down on paper
                   if they threw
it away.....would you believe them ten
years later.  Could you swallow thier
story?  with no proof?

  Certainly not.

You would have to know.  Punk kids, after all,
are shifty (at best).

And these kids... they did drugs.

luckily, however, they remembered the name
of the comic strip. . .

which is nothing more than 13 year old bastards
who have better things to do than pay attention to
their teachers.  They have a pen and a spiral notebook -
they want money for tang and OK Sodas ... ....
They realize that middle schoolers love sex.....
that they love violence - dark humor -death-
things denied to them by the institutions they
must attend.
So the 13 year old bastards give a face
to what is secretly wanted by everyone ... even
teachers (to noones great surprise).
When the comics are created and taken
by authority - yet it's makers are no reprimanded
in any way- the production merely triple$
to make up for the 'soft copies.'  And everbody
goes home happy.

But not me.  No - not this one.
